Deadlock is a six-versus-six game, and your draft decides more games than your aim on any given night. A comp that stacks one damage type or loads up on squishy carries loses to a balanced team that knows its roles before the first wave spawns. This guide walks through how to actually build a team across the pick phase.
Key points: Start with the two damage types the game is built around: bullet damage and spirit damage; Balancing damage types is the fastest way to make a comp that is hard to itemize against; Front-line and back-line picks do different jobs.
Deadlock is a six-versus-six game, and your draft decides more games than your aim on any given night. A comp that stacks one damage type or loads up on squishy carries loses to a balanced team that knows its roles before the first wave spawns. This guide walks through how to actually build a team across the pick phase.
Start with the two damage types the game is built around: bullet damage and spirit damage. Every hero leans on one or both, and enemy heroes can stack Bullet Armor or Spirit Armor to blunt whichever you bring. If all six of you deal bullet damage, the enemy just buys Bullet Armor and your whole comp flattens. Check what your team is loading into on the hero pages before you lock in.
Balancing damage types is the fastest way to make a comp that is hard to itemize against. Mix bullet-focused carries with spirit-heavy casters, and if you can, throw in heroes that threaten both. When the enemy has to split their resistances between bullet and spirit, they cannot fully counter any single threat, and your items buys stretch further.
Front-line and back-line picks do different jobs. Front-liners soak damage, start fights, and hold space, so they want Bullet Armor and Spirit Armor online early to buy time for everyone else. Back-liners deal the damage behind that wall but die fast if they get caught alone. A comp of six front-liners cannot kill anything; six back-liners get run over.
Counter-picking is about matching your hero to the threats on the other team, not just locking your favorite. You usually pick after seeing at least part of the enemy draft, so use those slots. If the enemy fields two immobile back-liners, a mobile diver that punishes positioning is worth more than a third tank.
Some basics of what beats what. Burst and dive heroes punish squishy back-liners who cannot escape. Long-range poke and crowd control punish slow, immobile front-liners that cannot close the gap. Heavy crowd control shuts down highly mobile heroes that rely on dodging. And persistent healing and lifesteal get answered by anti-heal items and heroes that apply them.
Adapting your pick to your team matters as much as countering the enemy. If you already have two carries who need farm and protection, adding a third does not help, you need a front-liner or a utility pick to enable them. Read your own comp first, then check the enemy. Our tier list shows who is strong right now, but the strongest hero in the lobby is the one your team actually needs.
Flexibility is why one-tricking hurts in Deadlock. Heroes fill different roles in different comps, and a pick that is perfect in one lineup is a liability in another. The players who climb are comfortable on a few heroes across roles, so they can fill whatever hole the draft leaves.
Synergy wins fights that raw stats do not. A dive hero landing on the enemy back-line is far deadlier when a front-liner follows up with crowd control, and an AoE ultimate shines when a teammate sets it up. Look for abilities that stack: lockdown plus burst, slow plus long-range poke, sustain plus a durable frontline.
Itemization is the other half of the draft. Your comp should be able to answer the enemy's defensive items: healing-reduction for sustain-heavy teams, burst damage or armor-shred to crack tanks, and mobility or escapes when you are up against dive. Plan your items around what the enemy comp is trying to do, not just your own damage numbers.
Do not forget laning. Deadlock spreads heroes across lanes, and certain heroes win or lose specific matchups. A strong lane duo can snowball souls and take objectives early, while a bad matchup can leave you behind all game. Assign lanes with your duo's damage types and kill pressure in mind.
Think about your comp's timing, too. Some lineups spike hard early and want to force fights and take objectives before the enemy comes online. Others scale and want to farm safely into a late-game power spike. A team that is half early-game and half late-game is usually strong at neither, so commit to a plan.
Finally, talk during the draft. Call out what you are picking, what roles are still open, and what the enemy has that scares you. A team that drafts out loud will out-pick a silent one almost every game, because you catch holes before they cost you.
