Stuck at the same rank for weeks? It's almost never raw aim — it's a handful of repeatable decisions you keep making every match. Here are the mistakes that quietly hold Deadlock players back, and the exact fix for each.
Read these against your own replays. If three or four sound like you, that's your short list — that's the gap between your current rank and the next one on the ranked ladder.
1. Missing last hits and denies. Souls are the only real income in Deadlock — there's no passive trickle to fall back on, so every creep you let die is tempo you never recover, and every creep you deny starves the enemy of the same. Fix: drill creep timing in the Sandbox until last hits feel automatic, then start denying on the soul economy rhythm instead of watching the health bar.
2. Dying in lane instead of trading safely. A lane death hands your opponent souls on top of the farm they already have, and it's a swing twice as big as it looks. Fix: trade when your cooldowns are up, disengage when they're not, back off into your own creeps, and ride the zipline out the moment a fight turns against you.
3. Farming too passively. Standing in lane between waves is dead time — camps and neutral souls are sitting there unclaimed while you watch creeps walk into each other. Fix: clear the nearest camp after each wave, then return for the next one. Treat camps as part of your farm route, not a special trip.
4. Never rotating. Deadlock is decided on the map, not in one lane. If mid is getting ganked or a lane is about to fall, the zipline exists so you can be there in seconds. Fix: check the minimap every few seconds and move when a fight starts somewhere that matters — not after it's already lost.
5. Fighting without numbers or vision. This is the most common way a winning player throws a lead. Diving into fog, standing in the open during a teamfight, or starting a fight a player down almost always ends the same way. Fix: fight near your creeps and high ground, enter the fog on your own terms, and count bodies before you commit.
6. Bad item timing. Souls in your pocket do nothing. Buying the wrong thing at the wrong moment — a damage item while you keep dying, or a luxury pickup before the cheap survival item — loses more games than missed shots ever will. Fix: buy before a fight, not during a death timer, and pick the item that solves the problem actually killing you.
7. Ignoring objectives after kills. A kill that doesn't turn into map pressure is just a stat. Fix: after a won fight, immediately look for a Walker, a neutral objective, or an urn push — convert the numbers advantage into permanent map control before the enemy respawns and it evaporates.
8. Overstaying after a win. Winning lane doesn't mean living in it. Once the towers are down and the wave is safe, sitting in the lane wastes the tempo you just earned. Fix: take the advantage to another lane, clear a camp, or reset for items — win the map, not the lane.
9. Playing too many heroes. You can't build real match-up instincts across half the roster — every hero has different range, cooldowns, and powerspikes. Fix: pick two or three and learn them deeply. Check their hero pages for builds and match-ups, then commit until their timing is muscle memory.
10. Not reviewing your own games. Blaming teammates feels better than it helps. The players climbing fastest are the ones who watch their own deaths and ask what they could have changed. Fix: review one loss a week — with a critical eye or a coach — and turn each mistake into a single rule for the next match.
None of these are talent problems. They're habits, and habits break fastest when someone watches the replay with you and points at the exact second a fight was lost. That's what coaching is for — a second pair of eyes on your own games, not generic advice.
Pick the one mistake that stings most, fix it for a week, then come back for the next. Small, boring changes compound into rank faster than any hero swap ever will.
