Deadlock is a MOBA built around souls, not kills. The sooner you stop treating it like a shooter where the scoreboard is everything, the faster you improve. These are the habits I drill into every new player before we touch anything fancy.
Key points: 1; 2; 3.
Deadlock is a MOBA built around souls, not kills. The sooner you stop treating it like a shooter where the scoreboard is everything, the faster you improve. These are the habits I drill into every new player before we touch anything fancy.
1. Treat last-hitting as your actual job. The orb from a dying trooper is your income. Shoot it, and shoot the enemy's orb too when they let it sit. Denying enemy souls widens the income gap faster than most early kills. If you want the full picture of why this matters, read the soul economy breakdown.
2. Learn the timing window, not just the target. Secure is fired at the end of the trooper's health bar, not the moment it starts dying. Watch the health drain, then fire. You'll deny and secure far more once you stop shooting early.
3. Stay alive over going for kills. A kill is worth a chunk of souls; dying feeds the enemy, gives them map pressure, and costs you lane time. When you're new, the correct play is almost always to walk away from a risky fight you only half win.
4. Pick two or three heroes and stop there. Rotating through the whole roster resets your learning every match. Read the hero pages, pick a couple that fit your aim and playstyle, and learn their limits before you branch out.
5. Buy items with a purpose, not a shopping spree. Early on, prioritize survivability and a reliable damage item for your lane. Buy what answers the enemy in front of you, then adapt as the game opens up. Buying on autopilot wastes souls you fought for.
6. Time your recalls and lane pressure. Pushing the lane before you go back means the wave crashes into the enemy tower instead of under yours. You lose less farm and they can't free-roam while you're shopping.
7. Watch the minimap between every action. After you confirm a last hit, glance up. Are mid and both lanes shown? Then are they coming for you? The map tells you whether to push or back off. It's covered in more depth in the map guide.
8. Stop chasing kills into fog. The moment an enemy runs toward their own jungle or an unwarded corner, they are baiting you or calling a gank. Break the chase, take the lane, and let them come back to you. Chasing is how new players donate their lead.
9. Respect the tower early. Diving under a live enemy tower without a clear kill and an escape is a fast way to feed. Win the poke war, force them out, and let the tower help you instead.
10. Trade when it's in your favor. If you can hit them without taking real damage back, do it — then step behind your troopers. Free chip damage on a laner who can't answer builds a kill window later without you risking death.
11. Learn one camp route in your jungle. Knowing when a neutral camp is up and how fast you clear it turns downtime into income. A player who farms rhythmically out-earns a player who only fights. Pair this with the soul economy ideas to see the compounding.
12. Communicate before you move, not after. A quick ping or a call of 'rotating mid' turns a coin-flip fight into a numbers advantage. In Deadlock, fights are won by who shows up together, not who is mechanically flashiest.
If you want this stuff corrected in real time instead of reading it, coaching is the fastest path. I'll watch your replays, point at the exact moments you chased, missed a deny, or bought the wrong item, and we'll fix them one habit at a time.
