Deadlock's heroes fall into four roles: Brawler, Marksman, Mystic, and Assassin. Understanding the roles helps you pick a hero that fits your natural playstyle — and that fit is a big part of climbing.
Key points: Brawlers are frontline fighters built for sustained combat; Marksmen are ranged damage dealers; Mystic heroes use spirit power and abilities for damage and utility.
Deadlock's heroes fall into four roles: Brawler, Marksman, Mystic, and Assassin. Understanding the roles helps you pick a hero that fits your natural playstyle — and that fit is a big part of climbing.
Brawlers are frontline fighters built for sustained combat. They have high health, strong melee damage, and durability. Abrams and Mo & Krill are classic examples. If you like being in the middle of fights, taking damage, and trading blows, Brawler is your role. They're forgiving heroes — mistakes cost less because you're hard to kill.
Marksmen are ranged damage dealers. They farm fast and scale into late-game powerhouses with high DPS. Seven and Haze fit this role. If you enjoy positioning, kiting, and dealing huge damage from range, Marksman suits you. They're more vulnerable early, so farming safely is key.
Mystic heroes use spirit power and abilities for damage and utility. Dynamo and Kelvin are Mystics. If you like controlling fights, setting up plays, and dealing ability-based damage, Mystic is your style. These heroes reward game sense over raw mechanics.
Assassins are high-mobility, high-burst heroes that excel at picking off targets. Pocket and Yamato are assassins. If you like outplaying opponents, diving the backline, and making highlight plays, Assassin is for you — but it's also the hardest role, because mistakes get punished hard.
Most players have a natural tendency toward one or two roles. Try each role for a few games and notice which feels comfortable. Your best rank will usually come from the role you naturally understand.
The meta also matters. Some roles are stronger in certain patches. If your favorite role is weak this patch, it's worth having a backup hero in another role rather than forcing a bad matchup.
Team composition matters at higher ranks. A team with no frontline and three assassins struggles. Learning to flex into what your team needs makes you a better player, even if your main role is something else.
The key is depth over breadth. Pick one role and one primary hero, learn it deeply, and keep a backup. A specialist with 200 games on their hero will always outperform a generalist who plays everything.
Whatever role you choose, remember the fundamentals apply to all: soul economy, positioning, and objective control. Role defines your job in a fight; fundamentals define whether you win the game.
