The fundamentals: items cost souls, and your build should match both your hero and the enemy team. A fixed build copied from the internet works, but adapting it to the match is what separates good players from great ones.
Early game, focus on lane items that help you win trades and farm. Health items and basic damage items are efficient early because they provide immediate value. Don't over-invest in late-game items while you're still laning — you need the early power to win the lane.
For Brawlers, survivability items are core. Health, armor, and lifesteal let you stay in fights longer and turn trades in your favor. Brawlers that die first are useless — durability is their job.
For Marksmen, damage and attack speed scale your DPS. Crit items and attack speed items multiply your damage output. Also grab a defensive item or two — a dead Marksman deals zero damage.
For Mystics, spirit power and cooldown reduction amplify your abilities. Utility items that provide slows, shields, or vision also shine on Mystics, who thrive on controlling fights.
For Assassins, burst damage and mobility are key. Items that let you close distance, burst a target, and escape after the kill multiply your effectiveness. Assassins live and die by their items hitting the right breakpoints.
Adapt to the enemy. If the enemy team is heavy on physical damage, buy armor. If they're spirit-heavy, buy spirit resistance. If you're getting focused, buy survivability even if it's not in your standard build.
Mid and late game, buy items that strengthen your win condition. If your team is ahead, snowball with damage. If behind, buy defensive items and wave-clear to stall into the late game.
Item timing matters as much as choice. Buying a big item at the right moment — right before a teamfight or objective — is worth more than buying it one minute later. Plan your purchases around the game's timers.
If you're unsure what to build, the simplest rule: build for your role, adapt to the enemy, and don't skip defensive items. A balanced build beats a greedy one in most games.
