Countering your opponents is what separates players who win lanes from players who win games. Each role has clear weaknesses you can exploit. Here's how to counter each one.
Key points: Countering Brawlers: Brawlers win extended trades but struggle to catch slippery targets; Countering Marksmen: Marksmen deal huge damage but are fragile; Countering Mystics: Mystics rely on ability cooldowns.
Countering your opponents is what separates players who win lanes from players who win games. Each role has clear weaknesses you can exploit. Here's how to counter each one.
Countering Brawlers: Brawlers win extended trades but struggle to catch slippery targets. Kite them, use slows and disables, and don't trade with them in melee range. Buy armor to reduce their sustained damage. A Brawler that can't reach you is useless.
Countering Marksmen: Marksmen deal huge damage but are fragile. Burst them down or lock them down with disables. Force them out of position in teamfights, and dive them before they can deal damage. A dead Marksman is the easiest carry to neutralize.
Countering Mystics: Mystics rely on ability cooldowns. Force them to use abilities poorly, then engage when they're on cooldown. Spirit resistance reduces their burst, and interrupting their channels ruins their combos. Mystics without cooldowns are very beatable.
Countering Assassins: Assassins are strongest when they pick isolated targets. Stick with your team, keep vision, and watch flanks. Save a disable for when the assassin engages, then burst them down - most assassins are fragile once their burst is spent.
General countering principles apply across roles. Track the enemy's items and power spikes. If they just bought a big item, play safe until you match it. If you have an item advantage, force fights while you're stronger.
Matchup knowledge is role-specific but game-wide. Knowing your hero's counters - and who you counter - lets you pick favorable fights and avoid losing ones. This alone improves your win rate noticeably.
Itemization is a counter too. Building against the enemy's damage type, buying healing reduction against sustain, and picking up utility to counter their engages all count as countering.
Vision and positioning counter everything. If you know where the enemy is, you can avoid bad fights and take good ones. Most deaths and lost games come from getting caught out, not from being outplayed.
The mindset: think about what the enemy wants to do, then deny it. They want to farm, deny them farm. They want to group, split and pressure. They want to fight, take it when you're stronger and avoid when you're weaker.
